Minutes of January 20 Rotary Awareness Month
Bob welcomed our guests Ann and Bill Reilly from Hyde Park, New York, Steve Malmberg from Belfast Maine and Majopro Marshall Islands, Francis and Sandra Cannon from Chester Pike, PA, Jeff Greaver from Davie Cooper City Club, and Stephen and Roz Shaw
from New Brunswick, N.J. Prez. Bob asked Steve Malmberg to explain how he belongs
to ME and the Marshall Islands. He spoke about how he and his wife, who are both
involved in higher education, have been working in the Marshall Islands for years to
help build a school. He explained about the very poor and barren lifestyle and living
condition of these people. Most children do not start school until they are 10-12
years-old, and when they graduate from high school, their reading skills are about at the 4th grade level. The school they have helped build will hopefully have a college level curriculum and also will teach basic skill sets for the students so they can return to their communities. Steve went on to say that due to the power of the Tribal Chiefs and the Island politics, very little is done for the people. His wife recently accepted the position of assistant provost at Nova Southeastern University. They will live in the area until he is called back to the islands.
Roz and Stephen shared about their club in New Jersey. They have 43 members
and do a number of projects. For a fundraiser they do a golf tournament.
They gave $20,000 in scholarships to high school students who come from low
income areas of the community. Two projects they are very proud of is their
dictionary distribution to 3rd graders every year and their hands-on projects of
refurbishing a fire station.
